View attachment 6109 Here a pic of my latest CDU , this is the one where we have a fault on a circuit which i cant find , my suspicians is a nail of screw through a cable its intermitant but testing even at 1000 volts doesnt show it , i tested the meter on my apprentice it works fine (joking honest lol) but a pain, i will find it you can switch it on will work for hours then go bang big style so i have resorted to disconnecting all parts of the circuit and reconnecting each leg switch wire one by one till i find it its a swine it goes bang whip the circuit tails out and nothing all clear R1R2 are fine 0.69 insulation >200 meg Zs 0.98 wiard ill say

That's a bit of a bugger! It's a long shot but does it happen when you walk in a certain place for example walk in the upstairs bedroom and you put pressure on a floorboard which in turn pushes a nail into the trapped cable enough to make it go boom baby boom! long shot I know

Have you carried insulation tests between conductors and the "MET" ?

Sorry I’ve got silly visions of Morris Dancers in the lounge while Nick does his testing. :hammer:

Heard of that sort of thing before - users with wheely chairs rolling over a floor socket and knocking out the circuit and all computers going off. So it does happen.

He might be good at morris dancing! lol i only mentioned it as i had a fault once where the guy was hoovering and the electrics tripped every time so i did the obvious thing of blaming the hoover but when pat tested all was good. It turns out it was only in one room and when he bumped the skirting board. Anyway joiner had refitted the skirting board and caught the cable with a nail but it was only long enough to touch accross cpc and neutral when knocked by the hoover! funniest fault yet but had the guy not mentioned it happening at that point it would have been a mofo to find!

i thought morris dancers were strictly english. in wales it's druid dancing.

thanks for that tel ill attatch it again , as for walking in a first floor bedroom sorry its a bungalow , im sure its a screw through a cable some where if only it would show up on testing i could find it nothing all clear out of all the circuits its just 1 and even with 1000 volts its clear its a right pig , Photo Jun 10, 14 32 14.jpg

so, have you tried the good old earth leakage clamp meter?

yes mate its readin 0.05 but its not just taking out the RCD its taking out the MCB with an almighty bang , as soon as it happens whip the tails out test all circuits all ok even at 1000 volts , ive removed the light fittings and put them in terminal and its still popping but you can have the circuit on for hours no one in the building and it goes its wiard , im convinced some where its a screw through a cable or nail not a nice one normally good at finding faults found one last night screw through a cable plasterd wall but you could see the fault measured it and worked out its poition cut a 75mm x 75 mm hole in the plaster and there it was 3 holes in the cable plasterer had mist the joist twice thrid time he got it lol three holes i ask you lol

I am sorry to say this, but that falls well below your usual standards

Observers may want to look to the lower inside edge of the consumer unit where 2 tiny pieces of what looks like plastic unwanted rubbish has been discarded in a very couldn't care less attitude
