Hi,

well ill the lad ive taken on one day a week has just told me he had secured a proper apprenticeship with a local controls and panel building company (Westbury in Narborough). I'm pleased for him to be honest, i know he wants to set up on his own when he has completed an apprenticeship, just have a feeling he will have limited experience other than that specific field maybe, who knows, just a thought.

anyway, it kind of helps me as I'm moving house away from here and didn't know how to tell him, kind of helps!

He was a nice lad and polite, but did I enjoy him working with me... Yes and no, he slowed me down and Cost me money. I was happy though in a way as I was helping him get somewhere. But he had other ideas obviously.

like you say alls well that ends well.

You could always use him now n again when you need a hand, weekends hols etc.

Life changes and everyone has their path to walk, these paths diverge and cross in weird and wonderful ways.
For him this is progress to different experience and specialisation, for you it is a loss, but one that will be filled with other things.
Embrace the experience and reflect on the gains and losses, you have helped someone to progress and that is no mean feat.

I think you have to accept any apprentice is going to cost you in there first year. There are some days where I really feel like I could make enormous use of them and others where I know they would be twiddling there thumbs. It would still be nice to pass my skills on to someone under my own name.

I trained a couple of apprentice's when I worked for my Uncle, but it wasn't quite the same as they were shared out between a few of us and sometimes they picked up things from the others that I didn't like.

I remember when i did my apprenticeship i spent 6 years with the same bloke and we almost became like best pals.....
I remember my 1st day he showed me a fuse and asked me if i knew what it was and i replied " is it an amp " lol
I think he thought i would never leave but i felt i needed to get out on site to see what all the fuss was about as i did my apprenticeship in maintenance.
Was a sad day when i left but life moves on !!!

Your words sound like a cross between Keats and the Dalai Lama Richard :smiley2:

Words are the voice of the mind, to interpret received words is to question your own mind.
Greater understanding can come from words whether written or spoken.
But great troubles also can come from this unveiling of the mind to others.
It is for the receiver to take the duty to fully comprehend the intent and meaning behind the words
And then to act for themselves in this greater knowledge.
