Hi I am trying to get some on site/work experience as I will be working towards my City and Guilds 2365 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation. My god, its so hard to get a job as an electricians mate/improver due to my age of 27. Is this what other people are experiencing? Any advice would be amazing right now.

I was 21 when I started my apprencticeship (youngest in the class), the oldest in my college class was 53..........so never too late!

Jeez ...how times change - think I was the youngest at 16 and the oldest was 21ish if I recall -most failed and some didn't get passed their aptitude/introduction test to ensure your Maths and Science knowledge was A -level.

A - level you say? ...
****.
I was the last school year to do A levels.. then it changed to GCE's then GCSE's .. I knew something was terribly wrong when one of my apprentices passed his college exams in about 2000 yet didn't know what 3 x 8 was and upon further questioning I found his maths at a very poor standard, the UK's Maths and Sciences competence of school leavers is one of the lowest in the world and this has happened all in the last 25years - they estimate the maths and English competence of a school leaver now is that of a 12yr old 30yrs ago.. we had to learn up to our 15th time table in our heads and we would miss breaks if the teacher caught you out giving a wrong answer.

This is no dig at yourself as its a failure of the education system and progressive goverments dumbing down education to maintain high pass rates- the various cause are for a different thread if your interested but the comparitive stat's between the decades and our bottomed out world position is very good evidence of this.

A levels are something different now, there above gcse's and below university

Darkwood, I think you mean 'O' levels,, these were replaced by the GSE and GCSE. I seem to remember seeing that a 'c' in the GCSE is roughly equivalent to the 'e' at 'O' level.
Also the old system of only allowing the top percentage of the year (nationally) to have the best grades was replaced with the 'get over a certain score to get a result' system, therefore allowing the educational system to have a higher pass rate.
Then back in your day it was probably only 1 in 20 was bright enough for university rather then the 1 in 3 of today.

Yes O level was the norm' for most but the top classes could do the easier O level or do the A level which scored highly with further Education and good apprenticeships out there over many career paths.
