My current qualifications:

17th edition level 3
level 1 - electrical mechanical engineering
level 2 - 2330
currently 80% through my level 3 NVQ electrical i stallaion and maintenance.

after i complete my nvq im goin self employed on the domestic installer scheme for 1 year. During this im going to atttempt to undertake the AM2. Then in the near future the inspection and test course.

Is this the correct road to go down? I heard the part p is "for wannabes" from a electrical teacher who teaches 17th edition. Said waste of time.

Yeah, the fast-track course definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Taking the fully qualified route will certainly make a lot more doors open for you in the future than the limited scope short courses.

I wish you luck with your studies and and I'm sure your investment in your training will pay off for you. There's some pretty knowledgeable guys around so if you have any problems or questions just open a thread and ask away.

The Part-P course is the biggest rip off known to man. Training providers, including local colleges, sell this as a qualification and they should be ashamed of themselves. Part-P is a building regulation and not a qualification, despite whether you have a piece of toilet-roll that says "part-p qualification" on it. Money making / robbing tw*ts.

How come you've not done the 2330 level 3 ? 2330 level 2/3/AM2 and NVQ3 all used to be part of the same sylabus, even before they've merged them to a knew qualification - C+G2357 ... maybe?

Not sure how the domestic installer scheme works, and don't really want to know. It's rotten to the core. However, if you've been advised you can do it that way then i don't see whats wrong with it.

2395 is a must though in my opinion, you don't technically need it to do inspection and test, but should anything go wrong and you can't prove that you're competent then you're up ---- creek without a paddel. Does the Domestic Installer scheme not insist that you have to do the 2394/2395 within a certain time frame? I know if you sign up with Napit you have 18months to get your inspection and testing qualifications passed.

Self employed isn't all that rosey - theres lots of hidden costs. Are you financially stable to go self-employed? Or you planning on taking some sort of grant?

Is their any need on gaining the inspection and testing? As its cheaper to be an approved contractor scheme to submit forms?

Post #3 ... it proves your competent in inspection and testing. Does the DI scheme not make you complete the 2394/2395 within a certain time frame ?

You don't need the 2394 and 2395 but like i say, you do something wrong and you're in trouble.

Re: My road to been "fully qualified"

Ah i see, i havent as of yet joined the domestic installer scheme. Oh and i dod take the lvl3 2330 but failed it as i was a douche in college and wasnt botherd at the time im kicking my self every day. So instead of throwing the years away i found out about nvq and am2. Since i done my lvl 2 they allowed me to take the nvq which is good but with a few more units.

Im currently getting payed 20 a day to get through my nvq hence self employ on domesitc to earn money and stick in at electrical

I'm not trying to burst your balloon here, just trying to let you know the facts.

Becoming Self Employed....

Own Tools :
- 110 v SDS Drill
- 18 v Battery Drill
- Full Tool Box
- Variety of Ladders, - extensions, steps, hop-ups ect...
- Van-Rack Tube for storing conduit and trunking
- 1000's of drill accessories
- Testing Equipment

And that's the basics. Then you'll need...

- A van
- Van Insurance / Road Tax
- Public Liability
- Premesis Insurance
- Health and Safety Insurance

You'll need about 5k to set up, and then after that you'll need to put away roughly ÂŁ500 a month to cover outgoings before you even make a profit.

If you can cover all this then go for it, i just don't want you getting your hopes up and thinking everythings rosey to then be disappointed when you find out the cost of being self-employed.
