Hi Troops,

just wondering if anyone has experience with Nail guns out there in sparky world. Reason is that I'm just about to self-build our extension and as it's a timber frame design by the architect I'm thinking that it's gonna be a whole lot less work to get a gun. Now, I know the King out on site that all the Chips use are Paslode 350's but they're also nearly £500 a pop by the time you've filled them, and I'm thinking that's a bit keen just for one project.

So, anyone have any suggestions for value for money alternatives?

R.

Have you had a look at Splitt nailers ? they used to be a lot cheaper but still well made.

I haven't really looked at any yet, thought I'd ask the experts first!! I will look at Splitt now.

i find one of these the best. nothing to go wrong. BAH42816.jpg

Sorry mate: Looks like i'm sending you on a wild goose chase. i've just googled Splitt nailers & Spliit tool & can't find any listings, I know they used to exist because a Kitchen fitter I use to do work for used them.

Yep - I kind of reached a similar conclusion about half an hour ago! I now know a whole lot more about split nails, though.

Nevermind, tis the season for Geese!

You mean SPIT nailers? they are all made by the same company (PASLODE and SPIT) they are made by ITW construction products......I have a contact at ITW Ltd that I can ask nicely and maybe get a discount, PM me in the new year and I will put you in touch...they do a really nice Electricians nailer as well as the framing nailers that you are looking at......I think they also rent them out as well and they can train you how to repair and maintain the nailers and give you a training certificate for gas and cartridge nailers....they do drills and abrasive wheels tickets too as far as I remember...

could you not look into hiring one? maybe negociate a good deal if your using it for a few weeks or whatever?

Paslode nail gun worth the money! can always sell if afterwards if you could bare to sell it. Fantastic tools, love mine cant imagine being without it.

A mate of mine repairs power tools and for nail guns he only rates Paslode as most of the rest are just copies of the Paslode and not as good

A word of warning to avoid expensive repair bills don't nail into knots with a nail gun it can end up bending the piston

I have an Hitachi NR90GC2 (paslode compatible) and a finish (brad) nailer Hitachi HT65GS. Works very well IMHO, doesn't seem to suffer in the cold the way the paslode can.

Glad you said that, I have been looking for a while at them and have been waiting for someone who has tried and tested it, does it take the paslode gas cartridge aswell?
If only bosch made one thats paslode compatible...

Yep, it uses the clipped D head nails and same gas as the paslode. The brad nailer uses compatible brads/gas as well. I'm currently using champion nails and gas with it (cheaper than the paslode).

Just wondering how much use they get. My power tool mate returned a few Hitachi nailers to his supplier that failed after being used for a few days and the rest he had in stock, didn't rate them any where near as good as Paslode and a poor imitation of the Paslode

Paslode do winter gas now which I assume is a butane / propane mix to allow for colder working

To be fair, not a huge amount on the scale of an full time chippy's. It's only been used for a loft conversion, garage conversion and some rafter work so far (around 3000ish nails). The brad gun even less, whole house door liners/stops and skirting.

Im a bit new to the forum but have a paslode im350 first fix and im250 second fix and have used it extensively as used to be first fix carpenter there really good when they work but as with all nail guns the do wear down and require servicing every so often and frequently need to be cleaned but it does save you lots of time, i only buy paslode nails as the other brand fuel cells make the fan more dirty and cause problems the hitachi gun is good but every1 with 1 has either paslode now or makita which is made by paslode for makita and cheaper but be carefull with rind nails as ive seen a couple of chippies messing around one was the main contractor and we had to cut the studs t the ceiling to get him down hope this helps Harry

I bought a gas powered Paslode gun a few years ago to install wooden fascia cladding on my property. I have to say it's a great tool, it saves a lot of time but the gas cannisters are hellish expensive where I am so the convenience came at a cost.

I bought a SPIT Pulsa a few months ago, second hand off ebay and an overhaul kit, as I had just won a job to install a complete smoke detection system: I work alone, so wanted something a bit faster than drill/plug/screw every 250/300mm.
BTW, the gun cost £275, and the fixings for the whole job were nearly £700.00, but I reckon I saved about a week/10 days (entire job was 3 months, then another 3 weeks for extras).

After some initial fiddling, the gun worked perfectly for 8+ hours a day, in brick, concrete, wood, and I beams (steel). This alone would make me buy a SPIT/Paslode nailer if I needed one. The gear is A1 + indestructable and the tech. support via phone is fantastic. BTW the best place (cheapest & good service) was Sitebox.
