it can be a long route to becoming a qualified spark and its taken years for rates to rise to a half decent level.
but now i think some firms and agencies are taking advantage tio drive rates down.
we already know six of the biggest agencies colluded to keep rates down and should be made to pay the workers compensation.
1/ my lad is working on a site but they are the lowest paid trade even the painters are on more a day!!/
2/skyblue agency ÂŁ2 an hour paycut plus lose an hour a day
3/ saw an advert recently 2391 testers ÂŁ11 an hour!! subcontract!!
4/ applied on site recently no chance mate were taken on 5 foreign workers ÂŁ98 per day am sure he implied this included the agency fee i just said you get what u pay for

we`ve allowed ourselves to become the lowest of the low on site nowadays and agencies should be made to pay a minimum rate across the board for sub contract workers
all sites using unskilled workers ie no skills card should be reported
lets see some response or general feeling before i post some more:):)

I know what you mean mate. The UK must be the worst country in the world for unskilled labour. They should take a leaf out of the Aussies immigration laws. The UK will never be GREAT again unless they get out of europe:mad:

the problem is now lads theres that many ruff sparkies about who just take the money and run ive come across a few jobs where the workmanship is shocking and they are nic redgistered what ever happend to take your time and do it right.

Anyone in business will capitalise on hard times to beat wages down

I look around at maintenance engineer jobs constantly and last year they were up in the thritys now they seem to be in the mid twenties! think I'll stay where I am for now:)

When the markets starts to recover industry will get busy again and contracts will come along, when this ahappens demand will drive wages up again

my gaffer got 3 sparks to site from MANPOWER to help us meet a deadline for one floor of a office block we were refurbishing it was a disaster recovery suite and we had wired all the clean power under raised floor pulled cables out of floor grommets where desks would sit just needed to second fix with 16a trailing commando skt there was about 40 to do then plugs on the desks needed doing also the existing lighting didnt meet clients required lux level the ceiling grid was 500x500 so they decided to rip it out and put a 600x600 grid in and new fittings so the three sparks turned up 2 started second fixing skts and one was flexing fittings up the guy who was flexing fittings up was cutting blue off the flex and terminating brown in live and g/y in neutral the 2 on the skts did about 10 when it was noticed some of them were plugs and some were skts we changed them later to find more than half were reversed polarity my gaffer rang MANPOWER who i think were charging 17 a hour for them and asked for a copy of there certs MANPOWER could not deliver any

Shocking but believable…I had same sort of thing had 2 men turn up to site to push the job on (never use agency’s tbh) one had jib card the other didn’t which I asked for and the one with the card only had side cutters and a….being one screwdriver could not believe it told them both where to go and the agency !!

Its a cut throat world out there, what annoys us is when we sometimes get into a situation where you are there to make the numbers up , due to some firms want 3 x quotes, nothing wrong with 3x quotes but usually unless theres a specific spec you are all doin the job differently , eg using good materials against some using rubbish materials.

Self regulation only ever gives credibility to the cowboys.
