I'm a beginning electrician and need some help filling out NIC forms!

How do you measure Line/Line insulation?
How do you measure Zs value?
How do you measure polarity?
When do you measure R1 + Rn or R2?

No offence mate but I reckon you need 2 provide a LOT more information!

Maybe start with how as "a beginning electrician" you are filling out NIC certs. Unless of course you're just trying to get ahead of the game in which case fair enough. Are you actually doing a job or just looking for info?

To the typist with the red ink above - TO PERFORM TESTING THE ELECTRICITY AT WORK REGULATIONS REQUIRES THE INSPECTOR TO BE COMPETENT. FROM THE POSTERS QUESTIONS IT IS OBVIOUS HE IS NOT AND SHOULD NOT BE TESTING UNTIL HE HAS HAD MORE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. THIS IS A HEALTH AND SAFETY ISSUE AND ALTHOUGH THE REPLIES MAY BE SLIGHTLY SARCASTIC THEY ARE VALID.

To the poster: you really ought to know this stuff. If you don't then you need to update your training and gain more experience before undertaking testing.

How do you measure Line/Line insulation?

With an insulation resistance tester between phases.

How do you measure Zs value?

Low impedance tester either a dead resistance test or a loop test and subtract Ze

How do you measure polarity?

It cannot be measured. Either it is correct or not. Test between live/earth to be sure of correct polarity.

When do you measure R1 + Rn or R2?

Most people only measure R1 + R2. You would need a wander lead to measure R2 only - forget it.

Hope that helps but from your questions I would think that I have probably confused you. All the best.

OP,

I would respectfully suggest getting yourself a copy of Guidance Note 3, and also enrolling on a C&G 2392 course as a minimum.

To not know what polarity is, well speaks for itself.

Sorry Mate,

You should wait until you are alot more competent before thinking about filling out any sort of test report or cert.

Given that Niceic forms can be filled out by any Tom Dick or Harry who may not know one end of a screwdriver from the other, because their system allows the farcical QS oversigning debacle
Their certificates can and do get filled out by incompetents regularly

Why be so hard on the poster?
He hasn't given any reason why he asked the questions
It may very well be that as part of his training he is having to get familliar with form filling
It was a resonable request from a stated beginner

With some of the nonesense that appears on Pirs etc its training that is sorely needed in our trade

Line Line insulation is only used when testing between line phases, so not applicable in single phase installs.

Zs is measured at an outlet on a ring, the furthest part of the circuit out on a radial circuit, it is measured using an Earth fault Loop Impedence Tester.

You check polarity with an appropriate test instrument for the job, my multifunction job does it for me.

The usual measurement is R1 + R2, this is the sum of the resistance of the Line and CPC resistances connected at opposite ends of the circuit, then it is roughly a quarter of this value at any given point of a ring final. You do this before energising the circuit to confirm that it is in spec for automatic disconnection of supply, and that the circuit is in good order with no faults.

Do yourself a favour and go and buy the IEE guidance note 3, it tells you all about testing and filling in certs.;)
