Hello all,

Could someone please point me in the right direction relating to spurs on a ring main and spurring off a spur? Need to find where it tells you the max number of spurs in ring and spurring of a spur. Also whenever I add any new wiring etc to a circuit I always bring that circuit up to 17th Edition Regulations but someone has told me I don't need to and that I'd write down on the sheet that it just doesn't comply with 17th Edition Regs. First I've heard this and even if it is correct I'm still going to continue the way I do by bringing the circuits up to regulations. Thanks.

If you spur off a ring straight to socket it's only one double socket per spur (no spurs off spurs) if the spur goes to a 13amp fused spur you can then spur as many from that as you like, look in the back of the regs book there is a diagram there, hope that makes sense

Thankyou for your reply. I'll check the regs book in the morning. I don't have anywhere near as much experience as the guy who I had this converation with but I had been told the same as what you've explained by my college tutor but the guy told me my college tutor was speaking rubbish so wasn't too sure!

I'm sure you will find it near the back in appendices I haven't got my regs books here or I'd tell you what page, good practice for you to find it though ;)

All of your work should comply with the current regulations. Some additional works to non compliant installations have to be carried out before you can do your work, otherwise it is deemed that any additional loads you enforce are resulting in the installation being "less safe" than before you did anything in the first place.

Refer to appendix 15 for your ring and radial circuit arrangements.

The information you require about RFCs:- B7671:2008 (BRB), Appendix 15.
You are correct, ALL the work you carry out eg. additions and/or alterations (temporary or permanent) to an installation must comply to the current regulations, 17th Edition (currently BS7671:2008) and must not impair the safety of the existing installation, therefore you must also ensure the DNOs equipment, the earthing and bonding are adequate for the altered circumstances, 131.8 applies.
