Hi everyone,

I am having some weird issues with the wiring in my apartment. I'm renting a fairly old apartment so I think the wiring is not grounded properly/possibly faulty and I'd like to understand what's going on so my electronics don't get damaged.

I'm concerned that some of the outlets in this place aren't grounded properly or at all.

So far I've plugged everything into surge protectors (not sure if this protects them completely).

I'm using an analog multimeter to check voltages and here's what I found for most outlets:

Neutral -> Hot = 120V
Neutral -> Ground = 50V
Hot -> Ground = 50V

Another outlet gives me:
Neutral -> Hot = 120V
Neutral -> Ground = 0V
Hot -> Ground = 0V

And some others give me (I think these are normal):
Neutral -> Hot = 120V
Neutral -> Ground = 0V
Hot -> Ground = 120V

Are any of those messed up? The 50V ones concern me because I have my electronics plugged into them and I don't want them to get damaged.
I'm trying to get my landlord to get an electrician in here but it might take a couple weeks. In the meantime I'm trying to make sure nothing gets damaged.

I also have cable TV.

If I connect my coaxial cable TV to my television, I see 50V between my HDMI cable connections (DVD players etc) and the TV HDMI sockets (is this harmful to the electronics??)
If I disconnect my cable TV, I see little to no voltage between the connections.

I'm concerned that these voltages might harm my computers/TV.

In the other room I'm having a bigger problem.

I have an outlet that reads:
Neutral -> Hot = 120V
Neutral -> Ground = 0V
Hot -> Ground = 120V

But if I check the voltage between the coaxial cable TV in that room and the ground, I get 120V !!
What is going on there?

If I try the same trick with another outlet I see either 50V (same problem as above), or at best 0V.

I've been looking online non stop but I can't find anything concrete about this and it might be several weeks until my landlord gets an electrician in here. What should I do? Disconnect everything and don't use any outlets?

Thanks so much for your help in advance.

Flakker,

This is a UK forum and I am guessing you are in the USA. Hence the lack of answers.

My opinion for what it is worth:
Your "Neutral -> Hot = 120V
Neutral -> Ground = 0V
Hot -> Ground = 120V" looks OK. some of the others do not appear to have a ground connection and one possibly a bad neutral connection as well. You need to get your landlord to get an electrician urgently as it is not safe. If there is a fault on any of your equipmentyou could end up with a case being live and not tripping the fuse or breaker. You then touch the case and possibly ____________

Good luck
