Confused on what multi meter to buy as so many on the market. Please can I have some advice on what one to buy. I don't want a cheap one as I want it to last.

the 117 only comes with a years guarantee the 175/177/179 come with a life time guarantee.

there are other brands as well but what is your budget? (175/177/179 on ebay for around ÂŁ100)

I suppose you need to have an idea what you are going to use it for and what functions and capabilities you need it to have. Asking for advice is one thing but you are the person using it. I have a number multimeters that have different functions and capabilities including logging and download which I find useful for those hard to find faults
 
Fluke 177, I've had one around 5 years now. It's been battered and abused. Still passes calibration every 6months with almost 0% deviation from the previous results.

unlike cheap meters the readings don't vary depending on the battery.

a mates can show 360v+ on 240 when the battery is low
