I am about to replace a thermostat which I think has been the cause of power supply tripping in the house.
This diagnosis was made by someone more experienced than myself so I hope it will solve the problem.
If the problem persists, can someone tell me of any other possible likely causes.

Thank you.

Hi

I assume you mean it is tripping your RCD?? Does it only trip when you turn on that thermostat?? If so it could be the stat is faulty and leaking to earth or it could be the element the stat is supplying take the connections of the element and make sure they are clear and try switching on the thermostat without the element connected then reconnect the element and if it trips you have found it in most cases it will be the element If you have a insulation tester you can test the element with that without any power on.

Sounds like the element to me, they can become porus and the insulating powder draws in the damp in the air when it is cold
If you have an old megger insulation resistance tester and connect across the live and earth on the element and hold the test button down for a minute or so you will see the reading increase slowly

Did you change the thermostat and did it cure the problem?

I have a similar problem with the RCD tripping as the oven gets to temperature. 6 months ago I changed the element despite it checking out ok on the megger. This surprisingly did cure the problem.

But now 6 months later the problem has returned.

I find it hard to believe that the new element has developed an intermittant failure as well.

Any advice would be appreciated.
