H guys,

Went to see a customers Neff Type D [FX37-4] kitchen extractor hood today, where he complains of it not absorbing the steam from cooking.

It has a chimney but doesn't have any side exits at the top for the re-circulated air. I think it sucks and blows out the air from the centre position above the hob as i held a tissue to one part and it sucked it and then blew it out on the other bit.

Is this right, as i have never seen this before.

Also as it is not absorbing very well what would be the best thing i could do to improve this. Everything seems to be working fine, would a new filter do the trick??

Cheers

The extractor is set up for recirculation only and will not remove steam.
If there is a chimney or flue that that directs outside then you should be able to remove a blanking piece where the flue attaches and allow the air to be extracted rather than recirculated, you also would not then need the filter.

its just strange because it doesn't have the exits out the side of the chimney for the recirculation. it seems to recirculate from the intake position where it sucks in. is this right?? or am i mistaken only i have never seen this before. i can definitely feel it blowing out as well as sucking in.

Quite possible that the extractor takes air in a certain points takes it through the grease filter and carbon filter and then releases is at other points on the same surface, however it would not be very efficient.Normally the filtered air would be extracted at a higher point into the room in general, however if it is a conversion from an extractor then it may be done the first way.If the filter is almost totally blocked then it could well be that the air is going up into the unit and getting blown bcak out without filtering.First thing take the covers off and inspect the filters, clean the solid filter as necessary and omit the carbon filter, test and see what changes. IF it now works then replace the carbon filter (if they are still available) job done, if not then look for other blockages. All in all it will not remove steam if it is a re circulation filter but it may trap some in condensation on the filters and re emit as fine droplets into the room.
