While tracing a unrelated fault in my own house i discovered that there is a dead short between the neutral conductor on the suppliers side and the earth which i've supplied through a spike. The house supply is took from a transformer on a pole in my back garden. Cant get my head roungd it. Is there a problem on the suppliers side or is there something more obvious? Im aware you would find this problem in a tncs supply but a tt?

The N of the transformer will be connected to an electrode there, so the impedance between N and E will only be the distance between your electrode and the transformer pole. In the past I've noticed that a lot of TT supplies have been changed to TN-C-S

As Marc says earth and neutral are the same thing on the supply side
