I came across an electricity meter in a block of flats where the supplier's side had a live and neutral cable in, but the side connecting to the consumer unit only had the live coming out of it - the neutral supplying it was henly blocked to another neutral - is this right/safe? What is the supply side neutral doing all on it's own in the meter??

Any answers gratefully received.

I think that the neutrals, in and out, are simply connected together inside the meter anyway, which is why the neutral terminals are next to each other, i.e. meter terminals are arranged in order L in, N in, N out, L out. The meter needs a neutral to operate but metering is done using the line only. That's how I understand it anyway (I'm sure someone will shout if I'm wrong :)).

Most meters require a Neutral to operate but dont monitor the N itself and is just a through connection, this is especially true of the older dial meters so just running the phase through and having 1 neutral wasn't uncommon but nowadays they its not often practised or seen.

Where’s the problem? Neutral is there for metering reference only. It doesn’t even mater if its connected to the output side instead of the input.

Thanks guys, I suppose my main worry was that it was connected to a neutral from another flat, (it was Henly bolcked to a neutral going off somewhere un known) but actually thinking about it, they would all be connected back at the supply cable to the building wouldn't they, and supplier's cut out only disconnects the live so it wouldn't pose an isolation risk.....does that sound right???
