Hi,

Could someone point me in the right direction with regards to getting a new three phase supply put in?

I need to get a new 3phase supply installed to a new garage building on a domestic property, the client is thinking he may want to run a couple of lathes, nothing very big, but also feed the adjacent house which already has a single phase supply.

He wants to disconnect the single phase supply from the house and run a private submain from the garage to the house.

So UK power Networks have requested loading details for the proposed installation. We dont know what supply will be required yet, its unlikely to be more that 20A per phase apart from the house which will be connected to 1 phase.

Can you tell me if UK power networks will allow unbalancing of their supply to that extent? Wont they just install a 100a 3 phase head regardless of my loading unless it exceeds their 100a head capacity?

Any helpful pointers gratefully accepted. Alternatively, I could just look up 2 generic lathes and add demand from those specs?

:ack2:

More than likely got to fill out their forms. But just ask for 70kva (3 Phase 100amp). As you have got to pay for new 3 Phase supply anyhow, why not leave the existing 1 Phase in situ. Save any additional cost removing 1 Phase supply + sub -main cost. Is 3 Phase supply available and nearby?

Only reason to remove the single phase supply is to save paying 2 lots of standing charge or whatever its called now! I realise and have pointed out that the submain will cost more than the standing charge for a few years!

Thanks for the replies guys. Anyone see a problem for DNO by adding house to one phase?

I think in the overall scheme of things, the 2 standing charges won't make a great of difference. Also if house and workshop have independent supplies, one or the other could be sold off in the future with out any electrical problems.

The problem as i see it, is going to be the cost to your customer!!

The initial cost to being able to run those couple of small lathes may well break the camels back!! lol!! Why not get single phase to 3 phase converters, got to be a far cheaper alternative to getting a DNO 3 phase supply run on the the property!!!

Certainly a much cheaper idea. I think a cheap convertor can be had from machine mart for 2 or 3 hundred quid.

Just re -read OP's question.........Sorry, I was thinking separate workshop --- garage. Going to be a costly exercise if 3 Phase brought in. As above has been said, converters is the way to go, especially if used occasionally.

I did a job on a pub a couple of years ago, the pub was small and only had single phase. There was 3 phase in a field right opposite, the transformer was on a pole and it was possible for 3 phase to be added to the pub because it was having a new kitchen fitted and it was creating 7 new bedrooms. The pole was the other side of the road, about 30 mtrs away, the cost= 14.5k for them to install 3 lines across and fit a cut out, the land lord changed his mind the tight fisted Flucker, so the job didn't happen, I only did the small bit in the end and lost out on the bigger job sigh, that was 2-3 years ago and the supply was directly across the road.

It's crossing the road they bump up the price for.
