Hi all,

Thought this might be a good place to ask, although I'm not sure if I should be posting this somewhere separately...

I made a mid life career change a couple of years ago, from a (completely unrelated) job. I went back to college and with some pretty poor teaching, mega studying, blood, sweat & tears, passed my HNC in electrical engineering, with a B.

I was then lucky enough to get a job as a trainee engineer, but a lot of the knowledge from the HNC (2.5 years ago) has slowly leaked away. I'm now really embarrassed by how much has gone, even the basic stuff, like how different circuits are physically wired up, and I desperately need to get myself up to speed again. In the near future, I'll be expected to assist with designing electrical work for projects such as schools and offices, as well as smaller jobs. I've already struggled this week with the layout of a typical fuseboard, and although I know what they do, how to lay out RCBOs, MCBs, RCDs within the fuseboard itself.

Can anyone suggest a readable book, probably about the level of electrical work for dummies, as there doesn't appear to be such a book (I could only find the electronics one), or some kind of refresher course, which goes back to basics? I'd be very grateful for any help or advice.

Thanks

i did the onc and a few units of the hnc

do you need to know about the regs

if so 17th would be a start and osg

Hi Mac, and thanks Vince,

I did the ONC too, but even longer ago than the HNC...the year before

I've got access to the 17th Edition, and can find my way around it ok, but by the nature of it, it's technical, and I really need the basics - revision/fresh learning on how to physically wire up circuits/layout of fuseboards etc. I've found a few helpful animation sites, but would be great to have a broad overview again, on a 'dummies' level! We didn't even have a coursebook - it was all taught on handouts. Need the practical stuff, at a basic level

My mentor at work is good, but I reckon I'm trying his patience!

thanks
