Hi All,
First post, so hi everyone. The forums are really helpful so hopefully you won’t mind a few newbie questions!
In a nutshell. 25. Live N London. Career change from an electrical related industry, but it’s safe to say I am the quintessential beginner. Wanted to train up and be employed/ self-employed electrician for a long time. Timing is right, finally can commit.
A short intensive training course is the preferred route for me..... but do, employers, customers, NICEIC, JIB etc?? Has anyone ever been known to look through the C&G certificates and other qualifications and see a “short-cut” route? (All due respect to said training companies and trainees, but albeit they’re expensive, am I right in seeing that as the sacrifice for a faster progression?)
I’d value an industry professional’s opinion, on whether I have the right idea and/or whether I am going to go wrong somewhere.
· Train with a private course provider e.g. OLCI, Able Skills. <RECOMENDATIONS NEAR-ISH LONDON WELCOME!> Ensuring the core certs and quals are covered (from what I’ve seen this is approx 7 – 12 months, achieving; C&G 2330 lvl 2 & 3, 2356 NVQ 3, C&G 2382 (17th ed.), 2391 and Part P – minimum requirements)
· Too old to be an apprentice, so should I work as an electrician’s mate or be the extra pair of hands anywhere I can (earning as my skills increase) for the duration and a few months after completing the certificates (until I have achieved NVQ 3) I’ve been told it’s not compulsory when doing a course but I reckon it’s the “better safe than sorry” approach?
Hopefully at that point (or earlier if advised it’s possible!) I can set up as self employed, and continue to advance.
NOW there’s the new C&G 2357; should I wait for a course on that next year? Is it better/worse for someone in my position? Will I waste time starting a 2330 level 2 course when the 3rd could become redundant???? How hard will it be getting AM2? Is the only downside waiting for it to start.
I don’t know a sparky to ask these questions, and don’t want to bother a local sparky with the questions as I hope to approach them for work in the future and make a better 1st impression.
Sorry for such a long post, hope someone can offer some advice.
Many thanks.
