a query, I have picked up a simple job!!! fit new cooker in a flat first floor, 32A MCB no RCD's most of wire in plastic channel apart from last metre which disappears behind tiles in kitchen, socket outlet at switch. although not on ground floor, so not likely to be used for outside, there is wire <50 hidden behind tiles for last metre, so as far as I can tell this means RCD or RCBO, the flat belongs to East dorset council, Have informed home warden, that may need RCBO. she has come back with note from council electrician Quoting "message from electrician for EDHA, RCBO if fitted can cause black elements so please do not fit the RCBO". very interesting your opinion would be gratefully appreciated.

RCBO if fitted can cause black elements so please do not fit the RCBO
What the hell does that mean or am i missing something here?
You also seem to be under the impression that the cable under the channeling dosn't afford the need for rcd as you point out about the last meter when refering to rcd protection. Plastic/Metal capping or channelling do not afford the required protection to omit the need of a rcd.

thanks for reply, my thoughts entirely how does a RCBO make elements go black, as regards channelling, yes I was going to fit rcbo anyway but this so called electrician how works for the council made me wonder what other ideas hes got as regards the regs

Ring him up with a request for an explanation, if he tries blinding you with technical crap then hes bullsh....... you, all an rcd will do is nuisence trip a little as the elements get old but its only doing its job and letting you know the element is on its last legs and requires replacing, when it was just a fuse protecting it in the good old days the elements used to blow up with big holes left in them because earth leakage wasn't been monitored.

thanks for info all of you, cannot beleive this person is doing work for the council, make you wonder what is excuse would be for saying what he said

No problems it is surface mini trunking, the council probably had to upgrade the cable years ago to 6mm when they found cable was under rated, probably 4mm before, and it was easier to fit surface rather than dig out the walls

Maybe your message wasn't relayed properly to the council electrician and he thought you were going to put an RCD in as a main switch, which if it nuisance tripped could lead to 'black outs'.
