Hi there,

I have just finished my NVQ level 3 Electrical Installation.

I am starting the C&G 2391 Inspection and testing in November in Bristol.

Until then i have registered as self employed. Not being "Part P","NICEIC", or any other approved Co. I'm not sure what work i can legally do/certify. Its always been a bit of a grey area.

Any advise would be great, so i can get stuck in.

Many thanks,

Myles.

dunno why everyone is so obsessed with private work. It's very competitive, as a newly qualified spark, you're on your own working with no back up, jobs in several parts like assessment, pricing, collecting materials, doing the job, problems, getting paid ( or not)...

Site work = turn up to work, get told what to do, collect materials from container, do the job, go home, get paid. How many of the parts of the first scenario do you NOT get paid for? Loads, especially if you don't get the job. You go to a customer's house, do a survey, go home, price up materials, send quote...too expensive. waste of unpaid time.

If you were a seasoned spark, I wouldn't be saying this, but just got NVQ3? Chill your butt on site for 2 years till things pick up a bit, and you gain some more experience.

Forget about PIR's, you won't even know what you are looking at. Especially without 2391.

This is just my opinion.

Good luck.

Oh yeah, forgot you have to have e few jobs and ÂŁ500 spare to do notifiable jobs, + ÂŁ for insurance, van, etc..

Sorry? I don't understand what you mean?
  1. periodics - Periodic Inspection Report on existing installations (usually needed by Estate Agents / Insurance companies)
  2. non-notifyable - some minor jobs that need not be notified to the Local Authority Building Control (LABC)
  3. remidial work - rectifying faults on existing installations
- You need Professional Indemnity Insurance if you are planning to do Periodic Inspection Report.
- You also need Public Liability Insurance if you are to do general electrical works.

Think hard before you leap into this and ask yourself this question "am I ready to do this?"

Cheers!

I do not have a problem with the terminology, thank you for clarifying it though. I was simply confused by the phrase "not notifyable see".

I am aware about how difficult it is to "go it alone" but am also working with a property developer and simply want to do some jobs on evenings and weekends to make some extra money. I have addressed many of the points that have been suggested throughout this, such as insurance. I wouldn't dream of undertaking work without correct precautions in place. This is why I wanted to clarify what sort of jobs I can sign off with my current level of qualification.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a rough list of the types of jobs I could undertake now. For example, can I do a re-wire, kitchens, bathrooms? I have the ability and skills to do these jobs, but am not sure of the legality involved (ie me signing the jobs off using copies of IEE wiring regs certificates)

Thanks everyone.

Great info, thanks Goody

You need to be registered with a self-certification scheme (NIC, Elecsa, Napit) to do anything other than the most basic domestic jobs. Costs around ÂŁ500 to register and they will assess you on a couple of jobs. Check their websites for all the details.
