I was doing a bit of snooping yesterday at how the house was wired and the way it seems to be, does seem right and getting worse.

1. Extractor Fan (Main Bathroom)
Functions off the lighting circuit (i understand ok)
Main feed goes into the the wall light switch, then runs up to the isolator switch above the door and then on to the extractor fan...this seems wrong

2. Main Upstairs lighting ring
It would appear that 5 of the 6 upstairs lights have all the wiring joined in the switch - not in the light ceiling rose - so each ceiling rose only has the feed from the switch to it.

Is any of this right?

Sounds like the lighting circuit has been looped at the switches instead of the ceiling roses. Nothing wrong with that. Some people prefer to do it that way. ;)

Yeah, we like to feed at the switches.. easier than ******* about with a 3 plate on the ceiling.

I'm a fan of looping into Wagos in choc boxes (junction box method). Quick, easy and maintenance free. You end up with 1 cable at switch and 1 cable at ceiling rose......SIMPLES ;)

Wouldn't this be an expensive and time consuming way of doing it, especially on a rewire?

Is it new house??....if it is there should be an installation cert which is evidence the job is correct.

Hi

I agree loop in at switches nothing wrong with that all new builds here in Scotland used this system, i find its easier to fault find, taking sws off is easy compared to taking down light fittings. My only problem with new builds is the use of 1mm twin and earth we recently did snagging on a site because original contractor went bust, every house had a fault and it was broken cable at sws, terminal cutting the 1mm core
