So i got given a new light fitting it uses down light lamps, and there is one already in it which is 75 watt, on the fitting it says 2 x 35 watt max..
Is it safe to keep the 75 watt bulb in?

In one word, no.

If the manufacturers recommendation is 2 x 35w that is what I would stick too.

Higher wattage = greater heat = greater risk of fire.

Im asuming GU10, and i never knew they went above 50w.. just looked on line and found them at 75watt!! I luv learning new stuff.. to the OP as Murdoch says increase lamp wattage above manufactures recomendation= greater fire risk
