Hi,

I'm new to this forum so it's great that this exists :)

I was wondering if someone can help. I am trying to take off an old light fitting at my mums house to replace it with a new candle bulb chandelier type light I got from a big DIY store for ÂŁ15. Her current light looks horrible and needs replacing. Anyway I took the old fitting off so i could see the wires but I just don't know where those electrical cables would need to be screwed into in the new light fitting. I haven't removed the old light so it's still attached.

I'm attaching photos of the old light which is still connected, the new light, wiring instructions and description of old and new wiring standards.

Anyway able to help me by letting me know which cables go where? I can't afford an electrician so want to try and do it myself. I've done some basic wiring like installing new power sockets next to existing ones but this is totally different.

Not sure if this matters but this light is in the downstairs hallway with a light switch next to it but there is another switch upstairs both whoch can turn this light on and off and I therefore guess it's a 2 way wiring that's there. Any help would be really really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is very standard wiring and the instructions you have detail it quite well.
Firstly make sure the circuit is switched off, not just the light as it will still be live and could kill.
You will need an additional terminal to connect the three red loop line wires, the rest of it is as per the instruction diagram.
The black (sleeved red) switch line goes to L, the two black neutral go to N and the green and yellow earths go to the terminal with the earth symbol.

If you cannot follow this and /or you are not confident in getting this correct, do not risk your life doing this and contact an electrician.

Oh yes and you will probably need to repair the ceiling.

Thank you both for your replies it's really useful. I will stop by at an electrical store and get the additional terminal.

I have found some terminal strips that come in 3A, 5A, 15A and 30A. Do you know which one I need? Also do all three red wires as mentioned above go into only one of these terminals?

Many thanks

you need a 5A single terminal. all 3 reds go in this with nothing else. then you have black with red sleeve to L, the 2 blacks to N. and the earths all together into E. ( might be easier to put into a separate terminal block and then a single gn/y to the E of the light.)

Ok that makes sense ill try that. Final question I promise :) the blue cable and the other cable that is next to the black red sleeved cable and almost looks grey-ish, where do they go?

...you'll soon realise that when you take the fitting down, the blue cable and brown cable will magically disappear.

Haha I just realised what they are :) I would love to do a basic electrical course (adding new cabling, shaving sockets etc) but I guess they don't exist ?

Whats the point of being qualified and working to a standard when they give instruction like that the loops in a terminal block outside the enclosure , oh just stick some tape round it it will be ok and shuve it in the ceiling

Sorry xfiles not having ago at you just the instruction book , terminal on loops in that type of fitting is ok
