Hi Guys,

I've just joined as i'm sure you can see. I've got what i hope is a really simple question regarding a dpdt switch. Can I wire it up to be used as a spst switch?

I've made a record player and i've hooked up a dpdt switch which works fine, it's just off when the switch is in the "on" position and on in the "off" position. Currently i believe i have the wires (both red) connected to 1 and 3, I ran a multi meter across the pins and they were the only ones that bought back a reading.

Like i say, it's probably a really simple answer, i just can't work it out! I've tried different combinations but none seem to get it switching on/off the right way.

Thanks in advance,
Lauren.

Welcome along to the forum.

It is easily possible to wire a DPDT as SPST.
It is identifying the terminals that is the key.
This diagram shows a DPDT switch and some random terminal numbers, not necessarily the same as on your switch.

It also shows a circuit with connections to those terminal numbers.
It sounds like you have diagram 2 and need diagram 1.
If you can identify the terminals correctly then all should be clear.
Start with Telectrix reference and use those as the start point then see which terminal is continuous to one of the commons when the switch is on.

"It works" and "it's safe" are not necessarily the same thing. With DIY work, they are often far from the same thing.
