Hi all,

Please can you give me your ideas/thoughts on the following job I went to look at last week.

The customer has two flats that, at the moment are operated on two old coin meters in each flat. One of these coin meters has broken and now needs replacing.

She has made numerous calls EDF regarding getting two new meters installed. Eventually they agreed to send out a surveyor to look at the job. It turns out that both flats are on a single phase feed from the road which he says is illegal as they must provide a100A feed to each flat. This is where the problem comes in. EDF has quoted £4680 + vat just to make a connection in the road a run a 12m three phase cable into to flats. This does not include digging the trench, ducting or new meters.

The flats are only small and at the moment have two small fuse boards back to back with 2 x 5A, 1 x 10A and 1 x 30A on each, hardly any demand. Would it be illegal to keep single phase as it is and install re-conditoned meters, new fuse boards and test and inspect existing wiring. Is it law to have a 100A supply to each flat?

Thanks

Something smells fishy here, in my mind if the EDF service is incorrect it is their responsibility to make right at their cost, are these flats owned by the occupants do they have a EDF cutout already in each flat or is their a landlord/tenant situation.
