Hi Guys,

I've just joined this forum and wanted to ask a few questions. . .

I am looking into doing a course to gain C&G as an Domestic installer. I have lots of previous experience but I now want to become legit. I work shifts and I will find it very difficult to commit to a full college course, I was thinking of doing a part time college course but came across various sites such as 'Trade-skills-4U'. I spoke to them and I was told that the Bronze course would be a good start. The course covers:

5 Day Domestic Installation Workshop
4 Day Inspection & Testing City & Guilds 2392-10: TS4U-92
5 Day Part P Domestic Installers Course: TS4U-PP
3 Day City & Guilds 2382-10 (17th Edition): TS4U-82

I want to eventually get into PAT testing and continue to undertake courses to extend my knowledge. I currently work as a property maintenance contractor in domestic properties. My question is, is this 'Bronze' course worth the paper its written on, if not i'd rather commit to going to trying to go to college and getting it done properly, instead of forking out over ÂŁ2k? I am only interested in domestic installations at present.

I can see that alot of guys on here are very anti 'intensive courses' but all im trying to do is help myself and to be able to sign off the work I already do, extractor fan here, outside light there etc, i'm not trying to become a quick fix electrician, but I would like the knowledge that my work is 100% safe. Your expert help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi Steve. If you already have electrical knowledge and are looking to just be able to sign things off (notify LABC) then I would consider getting your 17th edition and then going with a scheme like Napit or NICEIC who will want to inspect a couple of jobs, one minor and one major ask you questions on testing, if they are happy then you pay the membership and you can self certify.

PAT testing (C&G 2377) is a course that you can take separately but as with everything it costs, have a look at some of the threads re scheme membership. I did a short course over a year and TBH was far too expensive and I only really learnt when I worked with a friend who was kind enough to show me the ropes. Good luck, make use of the forum its such a great resource and many things you want to know is on here somewhere. All the best
