Tom-Leeds

Hi all. My name is Tom I’m from Leeds. I’ve been doing electrical work since I was 16. I had an electrical apprenticeship with a local firm through the JTL training scheme. I have completed all my college work up to level 3. Unfortunately the company went bust due to the recession. I was laid off in early 2009. I started to look for companies that would take me on as an apprentice but as the economy was on its **** it was very difficult.

I got a few days a week with an old guy doing fire alarms tests and general electrical maintaince. He retired after about 1 month of me been with him. After about 3 months I was taken off the JTL training scheme due to not have and employer.

I got a job with a local shop fitting firm in late 2009 and I’m still there. I’m not doing electrical work with them its more IT based. I now want to leave and hopefully get back into sparkying.

I need a 1 years work with a company in order to complete the fourth year of my apprenticeship and sit my AM2. I know this is going to be difficult to find a company. My other option is go self-employed as an electricians mate. But I would have to pay for my AM2.

My other option is to pay for a 2391 course but what do I need before I can do this? i have the following certificates. . . .

City & Guilds
Level 1 key skills, in information and communication technology
Level 2 key skills, in information and communication technology
Level 2 key skills, in application of number
Level 2 certificate, in Electro technical technology – installation (buildings and structures)
Level 2 certificate, Installation (Buildings and Structures) – Distinction
Level 2 certificate, Application of Health and Safety stage 2 - Credit
Level 2 certificate, Application of Health and safety Practical assignment- Pass
Level 2 certificate, working effectively and safely in the electro technical environment- Credit
Level 2 certificate, Principles of Electrotechnology.
Level 3 certificate, fault diagnosis and rectification – pass
Level 3 certificate, Application of health and safety – pass

Am I in a position to take the 2391 and become a qualified electrician? Then I can apply for more jobs and i belive i would have a better chance of getting one.

Welcome along tom. Believe it or not, there is no prerequisite for the 2391. I'll give you a pm (personal message) with details of a good college just outside of Leeds, 4 day course 1 day exam ÂŁ650. This qual will give you a better chance out there. Good luck in whichever road you decide to take and stick around, its pretty good in here.

When I had an apprentice working with me a couple of years back he was working through the JTL scheme with a company on a self employed basis. The guy who owned the company was his uncle and basically told the JTL rep that he couldn't offer him a job on the cards, the JTL accepted it

The young fella his all passed out now with a gold ecs JIB card and just passed all his assessments to apply for a visa to work and live in Australia, so look into to it and try finish your apprenticeship, its well worth it in the long run, especially the way things are going and next year its gonna get harder.
