Hi all.. don't know if this is in the correct place so sorry if its not...

My question is this...

Im landscaping my garden and want to install 240v power into my shed from the house. I'm going to be running power tools such as circular saws, bench grinders and routers as well as lighting and possibly an oil heater.

What type of cable should I buy? I. Guessing armoured as it'll be run underground to the shed through a plastic pipe. But what thickness of wire? Total distance of cable is under 25m

Thank you for your help

i'd make a guess at a 40A supply. how to install this safely and in compliance with regs. would entail a local spark assessing the situation and designing the install. several members in your area , i'm sure would be happy to quote.

Agree with Tel, get a local spark in to design this. You can do all the ground work to save time/money but you need some one that can look at the supply side as well. RCD up front may cause issues, local isolation, glanding and testing are not really for a DIYer.

I've designed and 2nd fixed these type of jobs in the past when people want to run their own cable, thats fine, saves me digging up a trench lol. Less than a day depending on the amount of sockets and lights etc. Wont cost much and know the job is done correctly.

as above. get a sparks to design the install, then whatever cable he specifies, you can dig trench and drop cable in to save a few quid. make sure that the sparks sees it before filling in.

Thanks for the advice.. my thoughts were to dig the ditch and lay some pvc pipe for trunking with a rope threaded through for now. Then when I finish the landscaping and get the hut in, I can pull the cable through and connect it all up.. but wasn't sure what cable and so what pvc pipe to use.. the pipe was going to be layed under a bed of gravel with a poured concrete cap then covered with soil/patio.. oh and a plastic tape saying cable below or something. .

I'll look into getting a quote though.. can anyone give me a really rough expectation amount? Am I talking over or under £1,000 ? Labour only.

thanks again

Forgot to say..

I'm looking at 1 maybe 2 lights in the ceiling (im thinking strip florescent lighting) and about 6 sockets in a strip.

Difficult to say exactly but why labour only? How would you know exactly what parts are required at the house end, the shed end, then the lights and sockets.

I'd recommend you get a couple of quotes, with you doing the digging....

i'd say under £1000. and that's including materials. assuming it's not going to be a nightmare getting to the CU.

I'd agree with Tel....Unless its a hellish nightmare getting to the CU / Installation needs serious work to bring it up to spec I can't see it being £1,000, but without seeing it, I couldn't give you a figure....
If you were closer I'd come, have a look and do the work....though If your offering £1000 I'm sure I could make the space in my diary and come down on any day of your choosing :-D
