Hi all,

I am 29 and want to retrain as an electrican but am confused as to what course to take. MANCAT, based in Manchester, have the C+G 2330 pt2 and 2330 pt3. Will passing the 2330 2 course qualify me to the correct standard or will I have to take 2330 pt3?

2330 pt3 can only be taken by those employed in the industry according to the course brochure; is there any way round this?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi

Level 2 would put you in the category of Electrical Improver. In order to be classed as a qualified spark you need to have Level 3, you also need to have the 2382 17th ed wiring regs and do your NVQ3 and 2391 Test and Inspection.

The best way to learn is on the job, and I don't think there is any compromise. There really is no point doing the entire course, getting your quals but have no experience, because employers will turn you away. If I was you I wouldn't look for a way around not working in the trade whilst doing the level 3.

The best advice is to see if you can get some form of employment in the electrical trade, send your CV to as many companies as possible and explain your situation.

Hope this help and goodluck!:D

City & Guilds 2391-10 Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations is NOT required to qualify as an Electrician. It is for experienced personnel already working in the Electrical Industry (i.e. those already qualified). It entitles an Electrician to regrade as an Approved Electrician however.

I think you'll find that's exactly what I said:rolleyes: Qualified/Approved....... all the same really.

No it's not though.

Qualified is Electrician Grading. Approved Electrician Grading is not required to be qualified.

The NVQ is the important last step to qualifying, not the 2391. The 2391 is for the already qualified.

Indeed they do. But that doesn't mean that it makes them qualified, except in that they hold that particular qualification. See the JIB Grading requirements.

In my opinion it is completely daft for employers to be asking for the 2391 when they are not asking for qualifications like the NVQ which are actually required.

All I can conclude is that many employers fail to understand the electrical qualifications. 2391 is for experienced personnel only and addresses Inspection, Testing and Certification. The NVQ is the Electrician qualification.

"This qualification is intended for experienced personnel working in the electrical industry. The qualification is not intended for non qualified electricians and/or those who do not have experience in inspecting, testing and certifying electrical equipment
However, the course is open to anyone having a good working knowledge of BS 7671 and current practical experience of inspection and testing of low voltage installations. It is not suitable for beginners."

I know what the qualification is and who it is intended for...............I have it!

The OP asked what quals he needs to be qualified! I added the 2391 in the list as I know what employers are looking for.......!
