Hi all,

Ive been working for myself about 18 months now and have decided to join the NICEIC approved contractor scheme.

Have got 2391 and 17th under my belt, but have a few questions. From other stuff ive read, they ask loads of questions mainly about earthing and bonding, RCD trip times etc, pretty standard stuff. I obviously dont want to fail, which from what i can gather is pretty rare.

I have gone through the assessment checklist and have everything in place including the test certs, check box records and all the boring stuff H&S related. When you get assessed do you or the inspector pick which jobs to look at, obviously i want to show him the best ones?

Also, i have a maintenance contract in a factroy taking up three days out of my five day week which i have a little database of relevant jobs i have written, including tests carried out and results etc. Would he want to see any of these jobs, mainly three phase motor changes, and industrial installations like inverters etc, or just the domestic / commercial side?

Lastly, the domestic jobs i have done, like shhower changes, rewires etc which are notifiable, i didnt notify the local building authortiy:eek: Will this hinder the assessment?

Is anyone in a similar situation as im reluctant to apply if it means the aseessment taking a few visits because of the cost:confused:

Can you also use jobs that you've done in the past (cash jobs) as assessment peices? As i could do a few of these before applying making sure everything is just so with regard to neatness and results .

Any replies welcome, please help this nervous individual out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

Hi

You choose the jobs if its contractor status its 4 jobs if domestic its two jobs.

You are legally required to notify building control as you know however this is not a fail on assessment infact it didnt even get mentioned on mine.

When you actually apply they will send you a list of whats actually needed and the most common type of fail.

Good luck

Chris

Hi.

You supply a list of jobs to the assessor and he selects from this list which ones he wants to go and see.

If you're going for AC, he will want to see jobs accross the whole range of elctrical works i.e commercial, industrial, domestic etc.

Non notification of jobs such as the ones you have mentioned will be frowned upon, everyone else has to abide by the rules.......

You just need to organise 5 clients with jobs across the type of work you install, they wont ask for a list from which they choose 5

They did with mine.....he said it's because they wanted to try and catch you out by making sure all the jobs are up to standard, not just the 5 you give him to look at.

Maybe things have changed.

What if you only have a couple of clients? I only have a pool of about 20 jobs over 2 clients for him to choose from and half of those are minor works. Will they be happy with this? All work previous to that was done with another spark so not signed off by me or technically my work.

Well do the jobs cover the range of different scenarios??? i.e bit of industrial, commercial, trunking/traywork, bit of conduit???

He was quite particular at my 1st assessment, that was 2006 though so maybe it's changed now.

Someone with a more recent AC enrolement may have better input than me.

Thanks. I only have some commercial jobs to show and a few domestic bits. The majority of the work is ring/radial work, extensions and new circuits in a single large commercial premises. Problem is all but one of my clients have wanted an NIC contractor in the past, so all electrical work done in other premises has been certificated by another spark I know (who I worked alongside on the jobs) The only work I have done soley on my own and certificated myself are at the one commercial site.

This means he will only have a pool of about 15 jobs in the same place to look over (all from different boards, different areas). Having said that that's all the type of work I'll be doing for now so it is representative of the types of work I will need to do in the future.

Thanks lads, i suppose the only way to know is to just apply. I reckon its down to the inspector on the day as well, hopefully catch a friday assessment when the mood is a bit lighter. You'll have to let us know how it goes, when is it? Best of british with it as well.

Mine's next Wednesday, I'll be sure to update and let you know what he says. Good thinking about booking a Friday slot, maybe should have thought of that!
