I've got my niceic inspection soon
i was wondering what sort of tips you can give me?
i.e what sort of tests will he wish to see for the minor works job?
will i require fibreglass stepladders as i only have aluminium (industrial) type
any idea on the sort of things to be looking up in the regs?
also anyone have a link to the niceic standards of working that they like to see?
thanks
matt

accuracy of test instruments mine are calibrated and certified
what else do i need to do?

pre-inspection nerves!
i just want it to go as smoothly as possible and try to arm myself with as much information beofrehand in the right areas. I know there is no way of knowing what exactly will be asked and expected just some rough ideas would be helpful:)

On my one, the tests that he wanted to show were proving dead, then R1+R2 on a radial circuit, followed by insulation resistance, followed by Zs once it was re-energised.

A lot of the questions my fella went through were all of the inspection check tick box, i.e. asking about different types of earthing, methods of protection. I think that if I had just memorised the tick sheet it would have been half the assessment done.

Wanted me to show him a minor works certificate along with the install, didn't get me to test it though. Made me show him where the main bonds were, and picked up a very large earthy waste pipe that ran through the building that wasn't earthed.

And finally asked me a lot about changes coming in from the 17th, i.e. RCD's for cables in walls that have metal work inside them etc.

My fella seemed to like telling you what he knew, so if you get the same kind of one then just nod and smile and take it all in, and don't argue!! He knew quite a lot though, and was quite interesting getting his ideas on the regs and how to put them into practical use....

You'll be fine! :)

Matt did my first one in DEC last year. I was cr@pping myself. NO NEED. The inspector I had was real good. Same with a mate of mine. He didn't require me to climb any ladders. He only had me remove 2 light switces for inspection. They will probably want you to do most tests, but you won't be stripping down a lighting circuit to to an IR test. Most of your tests will be done at the CU.

Just remember Safe isolation. Very important. When my inspector asked me to remove a light switch on a previously isolated circuit I made sure I checked the switch for safe isolation before he touched it. Whatever they ask you to strip down make sure it is dead before continuing.

Questions will be basic stuff on BS7671. Disconnection times 0.8 rule of thumb etc. Thats what it was on mine anyway. Make sure you have all the right labels in place ie Safety Earth connection at MET, and on bond clamps, 2 colour warnings on board, circuits labelled etc. Make sure your certs are neat and easy to read as well.

Finally DON'T WORRY. You will find out on the day that they are not the enemy. They are not looking to fail you. Mine really put me at ease and helped me out on a couple of tests. He could see I was nervous but also that I knew the basics and why I was performing the tests. I even made a couple of cock-ups on my certs but he just put me right and explained why.

You'll sail through and wonder what you were worrying about.:D

Thanks lads
i've got the health and safety policy from the niceic website
all i need now is the check sheet for regular testing of my test equipment where can i get one of those from?
thanks
matt
