Hi sparks.

Little question. Have just done a EICR on a old domestic installation. T-N-SC. No cpc in the lighting. Wylex Rewirable fuses. 30mA RCD installed before the board. This is has failed the trip tests. What do you suggest I recommend? Do the lights need rewiring or will a new RCD/board change cover it. I think the installation with properly need a complete rewire, but was wondering what you guys thought.
Cheers

recommend rewiring the lights. otherwise, if customer won't pay for that, you need to ensure that all fittings are class II and that the back box lugs are insulated ( plastic ). also label CU to the effect " no cpc on lighting circuit/s. class II fittings only to be used."

Obviously as your only doing an EICR your reporting on the condition of the installation.

So though there is no CPC in the lighting circuit and it's a rewirable CU so

Are your disconnection times ok
As Tel said is there any class II fittings
Is there any sign of damage
Is there any main bonding or supplementary bonding

All these variants will tell you what to code this

My main cause of looking is why the upfront RCD protection.

Is it new?
Have there been any new work done to the 17th
What was your Ze result
Is it in fact an RCD or a ELCB

as usual, malcolm, you gave a more in depth answer than i did. sometimes i get lazy with the typing. LOL.

30mA RCD? Are you sure it wasn't a BS 4293 RCCB ? I think somebody has already asked the same question. I see a lot of these when doing work on older properties where a TT system has been converted to PME or a DIY version of, and, in most cases everything complies or appears to and they are in good working condition.

As others have said but may need reiterating

check for:
1/ Earthing, polarity of supply
2/ PSC
3/ Main Protective Bonding
4/ RCD/RCCB
5/ Class II for lights, accessories and switching

Thanks for the replies, guys. Think I'm going to have to go back and check the system again. I think it was a RCCB....Bugger....Still, if you don't learn every day, it's been a bit of a waste.

I have been back and retested. It is covered by a 300mA RCCB. The fuses are 3036. The ipf is coming in at 2.4ka. The breaking cap for these fuses is 2ka. So do I fail it on that?. There are bulkhead lights which are plastic, but have reflective metal strips in them. As there is no CPC in the lights, do these need changing?
Thanks for any help!

My guess is an earth to N fault in the damaged light fitting. This will become a problem when other devices draw large currents.
