hello chaps looked at a bathroom today there wanting down lights, fan, problem is theres no earth at the lights in the house and the house is mint you know the type stinks of pledge..and they dont want any mess which rewiring the lights would definitley cause .what do you think about putting a rcd fused spur of the sockets (fused down of course) to feed the lights and fan in the bathroom fan via tp sw, and also would it be a minor works any thoughts input are welcome?

thanks

hi there ,where is the fuseboard does it have mcbs or rewireables if mcbs if board is in meter cupboard run cable up outside wall into loft place rcd spur and fan isolator outside bathroom jb existing light cables (ie no earth)make note on board inform customer make sure rcd spur isolates both fan and lights obviously. If this is the case with board i hope this idea helps u otherwise scratch your head abit more ps your idea is feasible but personally id go back to fuseboard new circuit exempts u from all the existing circuits if any problems ie n-e faults or no continuity on ring sounds like property could do with a rewire regards leckyman69

I had a situation like this before, but customer agreed to partial rewire.

I often wonder if using any available suplementary bonding to run a cpc off would be acceptable. I really cant see why not.

Plastic pull switch, 12v down lights and plastic fan and isolator, none of which require an earth. Break into the lighting circuit in the loft and fit a RCD switch fused spur to cable feeding bathroom part of circuit, a doddle if its loop in/out, and no too difficult if its in singles etc or loop at switch. Job done. Fit the spur somewhere near the loft hatch to make it accessible ish. Because its a special location and you are changing the circuit protection in my opinion it is an EIC and notifiable, not MWC.;)

Cheers.........Howard

So because your adding a RCD FCU you would issue EIC and not minor works? Even though it's an alteration/addition to a circuit, and the original protective device on the circuit has not been changed...?

Different ways of looking at this I suppose

Yes Sid i would, because although the original protective device is still in place you have altered the protection on part of the circuit. This is just my opinion and what i would do, but i may be wrong, a MWC maybe adequate.
