Hi all.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have just recently joined NAPIT and am therefore relatively inexpearienced practicing electrician.

I have just been given the opportunity to rewire a back to back in Leeds and have come to view the property to find it completely gutted no plaster on wall no ceilings no skirting... NO Earthing!

I found the cut-out in the cellar and some remnants of clipped unsleaved twisted wiring on the cellar walls eminating from the direction of the fuse box.

No evidence of a main earth cable from the cut-out nor from the cable sheathing. Only a SWA cable which lead through into some steel conduit and then through to the next door neighbours property (guess its a shared supply, as with the water inlet pipe). No sign of an earth electrode.

From what I've seen I'm assuming the means of earthing may have been iether through the water or gas supply pipes, although I cant see any evidence to support that.

The refurb is under a tight schedule and the only means of supply is a single socket supplied from a BS 3036 fuse/box. all other wiring has been removed.

I've informed the owner that the current supply is dangerous to use and needs to be seen to ASAP.

Other contractors need a supply to continue work and I'm aware the DNO will not be in a hurry to supply an earth if we request one today.

Can anyone tell me how long and at what cost might I expect them to come out and fix the problem. In the light of there not being a TN-S or TNC-S system would they charge.

Also would it be ok to supply a temporary TT system so work can continue while they get around to doing the job. Or would they insist that since the TT has been installed...no need for em to come out.

Many Thanks.

All temporary site installations will be a TT system, it's in section 7 of BS7671. I would install your temporary site supply as a TT system and get on the blower to local DNO first thing in the morning to see if a PME system is available at all.

Have you taken a Zs reading at the single socket that's there to see it there is an earth present at all???

An update on my no earthing at cutout.

Been back to property for a much closer look.

From the remains of the wiring its apparent the earthing system was unsheathed tin plated copper attached to the mains water pipe which also supplies the adjoining property to the back (the back to back). Took a look at next doors supply (student occupied) had to fight my way throught the mess and found their supply was all shiny and new TNC-S.

Photos of the lesser of the two can be found at this LInk

Any further advice comments welcome.

I've installed an Earth Rod as temporary measure (Ze of 95 ohm.) Until I can get the Customer to arrange fior the DNO to do their bit. My consumer Unit will follow ASAP. Supply is locked down and Safe from any Contractors until I've fitted the new C/U.
