One of my local shops sells fruit and veg, halal meat and other dry goods that are common on foreign lands, they have been extending the shop over the last 3 months with extra stuff including more fridges installed.

So I pop in there on my way home to get some salads and the power is out. The chap on the till says an electrician is on the way but could you have a quick look (he knew I was an electrician as I had my work gear on), he said last time this happened it affected other shops but not this time. So I have a quick butchers (get the pun from what they sell). The set up is a three phase supply. One phase is unused, one phase has a meter with no output and the third phase has a meter that supplies the shop. All this is behind the till. The phase with a meter but no output has its light on. I press a couple of RCD with no result so I say it looks like either a phase is out or the fuse is gone.

Then the spark turns up, he is someone I vagely know, he has been the one doing the electrical work on the shop. I have seen him in my wholesalers but not really chatted to him. I decide to hang around to see if its the phase or the fuse. So he has a quick look and then decides to remove the fuse for the meter that does nothing. So he gives it a pull and nothing happens. He then puts his foot on the main head and gives the fuse a really good tug, then he starts really yanking at it. The board behind the meter is now starting to move.

Its at this point that I feel I have to something for everyones safety. It was one of the older type that has a screw holding the fuse in. So I says "er mate, I think you will find that there is a screw holding that bullet in". He goes "o yer, cheers". So he gets a screwdriver out and swaps the fuse around and bobs your uncle the power is back on.

Its at this point that I say good luck in sorting out the problem and leave, chuckling to myself on the way home!

What a mug!

I guess you mean that it is the service fuse that had gone? In which case, it is only a matter of a short amount of time before the fuse goes again. It sounds like the load on that single phase is now too much.

They may need to liven up one of the other phases, add another CU, etc etc…..
