Recently started in a new job where company is very safety orientated, all machines have key exchange entry systems and every one has their own lockoff padlock.
Talking to my supervisor (mechanical background) today and telling him about the correct safe isolation proceedure using voltage testers and proving units, his answer was "production is god" if you think the managers will wait while you fart around with testers and proving units you will end up being disciplined, I can't wait :D

you are resposible for your own health & safety on site..
and others...
but you come paramount...

Take a faceplate off a lightswitch or something and ask your manager to touch the live wires, and see if he still dosent want you to fart about safely isolating the supply, some health and safety is just stupid, safe isolation is one of the crucial ones IMHO. The old saying "Better to be safe than sorry" comes to mind.

now now...
i`v changed switch plates live....
but i was always in control...

Quote H&S act to the manager and the EAWR act, point out that they are statute law and that should you not abide by them and any injury is sustained then a court of law will not find in his favour. Tell him you as a professional are obliged to abide by them. Explain that the safe isolation procedure only adds moments to the Maintenance time.

i wouldn`t encourage enyone to do what i`v said at #4...
but...

I know a fire engineer who connects fire panels into boards live...so your not the only one

Surley if you are being cafeful enough not to...kill yourself... you would spend more time than being able to touch everything more "freely"?

Bet within the next 2 weeks you've 'conformed' to his way of thinking :)
