Hey guys , just looking for advice really, at the moment im an electrician working with an approved electrician, doing domestic and small commercial installations. I want to start on my own or look for a big firm to work for but not quite sure what to do. Advice please?

Well, looks like 'make your mind up time'. Look for vacancies or take the plunge, only you know the answer. Industry not in great shape at the moment, so if you've got a steady job ?????? List of qualifications would help.

You and thousands of people out there in that situation. I would say consider a move to an commercial or industrial employer perhaps as an in-house electrician. 2391 and some industrial experience would be useful. That way you get a proper job and will gain from other in house sparkies experience. Going on your own could be a hell of a lot worse than feeling used.

If your feeling fed up of feeling used then working for a big company is probably only going to make that worse.

Steady job now, could try setting up on your own but in your own time, evenings & weekends etc. Get a feel for how it will go from that but keep the steady wage coming in. It'll probably cost you at the very least a scheme membership if England/Wales based, after that is likes of insurance/test gear/tools/plant etc.

I'd reckon the reason you maybe can't find anywhere else to work is that generally there isn't any jobs about. Agency work perhaps, but I wouldn't like to be relying on any of that.

Going alone involves a whole diff mindset.PRO'S1. Don't answer to anybody.2. Full on commitment = financial Gain3. Discreet personal Relationship.CONS1. After 5pm till 8am you can switch off ( no quotes etc )2. Non personal.3. No financial gain ( apart from BOSS man ):)

It depends on how far through you are, if you are in the first half then I would suggest you switch over, if you are in the last third then see it...

I did my NVQ a couple of years back now and as I was a sole trader as a mate, I was my employer, so they just let me sign both bits
