Hi all,

I am looking to have some work done in my house:
- Install extractor into ensuite
- Change from ceiling rose to spotlights in ensuite
- Change from ceiling rose to spotlights in lounge
- Change from ceiling rose to spotlights in kitchen

From what I have read, the ensuite and kitchen work does require notification under Part P.

So, my question is this:

Do I, go with a Part P installer or, a non Part P guy (half the cost) and then get someone from the council in to inspect?

From reading other posts it looks like getting the council in could lead to pain, and I guess it's going to cost me extra.

Thanks in advance for all information and comments :D

110% go with a part p spark instead of the cheaper sparky from the pub
The cheaper guy normally cheaper too as using cheaper gear and cutting a lot more corners

As above get yourself a registered electrician. This is your guarantee that he/she has the relevent qualifications and experience to pass a very strict scheme examination each year and it is also your guarantee that if anything goes wrong you have a national company to complain to and sort out any wrong doings.

That bloke down the pub is cheap for a reason, ask yourself why? These are the type of people that end up on programs like rouge traders, DIY SOS.

The council would would want to see the non registered sparkys qualifications and if they could not provide evidence/knowledge would charge £250 maybe just to send someone out to test and sign the work off as satisfactory(this person would be part p registered & qualified)so its a bit like cutting your nose off to spite your face, more cost effective for you imo to use a someone that will do the job and notify biulding control on your behalf, out of interest what did the non part p spark quote?there are something like 30000 members on this site so sure some people would quote you happy.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I realise doing this online isn't easy but can anyone give me an idea of a ball park figure for the work so I know if the quotes I have thus far are about right?

I am looking for labour cost only including VAT

Kitchen - Install 6 spotlights (Halers LEDs)
Lounge - Move one rose (no need to go past joist, but may need cable extension)
Lounge - Replace other rose with 6 spotlights (Halers LEDs)
Note: Lounge circuits are separately switched
En Suite - Replace rose with 2 spotlights (Halers LEDs)
En Suite - Install extractor fan (currently extractor is passivent)

Whoever you have,be warned the highest price does not mean the best, some of the best rouges are very expensive, also, the cheapest may not be the worst,I am extra cheap, but I couple it with high quality work, thats just my personal decision

When making a choice, get evidence off past customers first hand of their service
No descent spark would be un afraid of providing references this way
Do not accept photographic evidence, that would mean zilch

There are many sparks who are very highly skilled who do not register and there are sparks who are registered with little experience, so make the choice an economic one for the notification part
