Hi All,
I have got a nuisance tripping problem on a kitchen ring circuit with its own RCBO.This includes fridge/freezer,washing machine, cooker hood, microwave, stereo and kettle. The tripping happens very irregularly!!!!!!
Which item is most likely to cause this and for what reason??????
Also,is it worth getting a PAT test done on these appliances?????
Thanks Rob

could well be a cumulative thing with 2 or more appliances contributing some earth leakage. If it's possible it might be worth disconnecting one or more and trying to establish which one(s) are the culprits.
Anything with capacitors/ electronic circuitry could be one of the less obvious causes that just start to occur as the appliances age.

Do you have an RCD ramp test function on your meter?

If so, do a ramp test without any load on the circuit...then do a ramp test with each piece of equipment switched on...it might give you an indication of where the leakage is coming from.

Another method would be to use a clamp ammeter on the RCD ...this will need a suitable RCD with a good resolution however.

I would agree with the accumulative leakage of all the appliances. As suggested ramp testing the RCBO with one appliance at a time plugged in will give you the best idea of which one is the biggest contributor.

If they have one of those kettles which fits onto a base with a socket, check for water being spilled into the base socket. I've traced occasional tripping on kitchen rings to this on several occasions.....including in my own gaff when the split load rcd tripped one christmas day !

Yep had this as well ! only a small leak then shook base unit and water dripped out. and a washing machine with mice damage to controll wiring ! also if washing machine elements get burnt out the chassis can become live !
