a pal of mines company just took out a lease on an old council nursery with a look to re opening it, he's asked if i will do any electrical work needed, but i werent sure if there are any regulations or things i need to be made aware of concerning it and was wondering if any of you knew of any?

If you mean 'nursery specific' regulations then no, a nursery is not a special location.

We carry out periodic inspections for a local authority on many schools and nursery's and they will take a keen interest in certification for all statutory duties, even though this sounds like a private concern.

i jus wondered if if there was summet in a book somewhere, as its not the most common job and as it open to children and public thought there might be specific regs but i guess not. all good then :)

Not specific reg's as such although Environmental Health do an annual inspection and PIR's and PAT have made it onto the tick sheet I'm pleased to say!

Just check if the Local Authority require certification from a scheme provider, it still happens sometimes!

Just be aware of the purpose of the installation and make sure any necessary considerations have been met.

For example, I went with the wife to the doctors earlier and they've just had installed these touch screens that you use to check in. It was fed via trunking up to the suspended ceiling, then 2 metres to the right it came down in trunking to a single socket where it was simply plugged in. This would be acceptable as a source of isolation. However this particular socket was in the children's play area, where they are left to play around with all that they can get their hands on. I had previously suggested to the staff that they looked to getting the sockets blanked off, or at least put those blanks to prevent things being jammed in. They opted for the latter.. but they have now gone from one step forward to two steps back.

The nursery's that we test are removing socket covers on our and HSE advice, a BS 1363 socket outlet can constitute a far bigger danger when socket covers are inserted, PLEASE LOOK AT THIS SITE: FatallyFlawed

Their campaign is gathering momentum now-retailers and HSE are taking notice!

i was reading the post and thought exactly the same , if im not mistaken MK socket shutters will not open if the earth is inserted they will only open when the full plug is inserted , as far as im aware its one of the reasons they are comonly used in schools and offices also the reason they are dearer
