The NVQ 3 and the C&G 2330 are both being replaced with the C&G 2357 diploma in electrical installation.
It combines the 2 qualies and is a lot more work based.

City and Guilds 2357 (QCF Replacement)
The qualification currently due to replace both the C&G2330 and the C&G2356 when they expire is, at this moment in time, going to be called the C&G2357 and is going to be at level 3. We are currently unaware of what EAL intend to call their qualification although they are currently writing the electrotechnical units so it will be reasonable to expect them to be the first awarding body to release the official finalised units. In contrast, City and Guilds are writing the Plumbing units and will be approving the electrotechnical units only. At this moment in time, there does not look to be a level 2 equivalent, the qualification may well be similar to the EAL version which is a 700+ hour Level 3 qualification only.
The final units have to be signed off by Summit Skills by the end of October but there are currently draft versions, as outlined below, in circulation for scrutiny. There are currently 8 knowledge units which are still in development and subject to change at any point. There will be post implementation reviews of the units after they have been launched slated for sometime in November 2010.
Each unit, in line with the new QCF qualification structure, will be modular and completely stand alone. Early reports indicate that there will be a lot of health and safety involved because of the modular nature of each unit, it is hoped that there will be a mechanism in place to avoid repeating the similar elements in individual units such as an APL (accreditation of prior learning) procedure. There has been talk of the introduction of assignments into the course (similar to the C&G2360 assignments) along with practical assessments (similar to the 2330). There has been a push from certain elements within Summit Skills to reduce the amount of science taught due to lack of relevance. This goes against almost every other school of thought within the industry, including that of this websites, we are once again on the verge of dumbing down the qualification and creating something akin to the rather weak C&G2351 experiment where the content was slashed way too much to enable students to pass. There is a big danger that we do not learn from past mistakes, we hope that Summit Skills see sense and do not force the “hard” parts out of the syllabus just to push achievement rates up.
There is some early concern that there will not be enough time built into the course to allow the correct assessment procedures to take place. At the moment, colleges with large groups have difficulty in getting the students through on time due to the amount of assessment work involved with the C&G2330, particularly with the 2330-302 and the 2330-303 which has 2 written exams, 2 booklets and 2 practical exams to assess (including live working, which should be well supervised). If there are any resits, then frequently these turn into non timely achievements which penalise the college financially. There is still much to discern about the funding for the replacement courses which needs to be addressed as soon as possible to give training providers chance to implement the changes successfully.
Students that are currently sitting the 2330 Level 2 will be able to register on the 2330 Level 3 but they need to do so before September 2010. After this date, only qualifications that adhere to the new QCF framework will be funded by the government, after September 2010 the 2330 will no longer be eligible to receive government funding. Of course, there will be the option of running this course as a cost recovery course (learner pays all the fees) until registration and certification of the 2330 end.
And a bit more........
Here are the proposed replacement units for the new electrotechnical (Installation Electrician route as far as we can gather) qualification:
Replacement 2330 Units
- Unit 1 - Health and Safety & Legislation
- Unit 2 - Environmental & Legislation
- Unit 3 - Understand procedures for organising the work environment for the installation of electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures.
- Unit 4 - Understand procedures for planning, preparing and installing electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures
- Unit 5 - Understand procedures for terminating and connecting electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures
- Unit 6 - Understand procedures for the inspection, testing and commissioning of electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures.
- Unit 7 - Understand procedures for diagnosing and correcting faults in electrical systems and equipment in buildings and structures.
- Unit 8 - Understand electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems
Comments on the units
Currently units 1, 2, 3 and 4 are covered in the unit 201 of the 2330. Unit 5 is very similar to the old 236 Part 2 syllabus and is close to the 2330-205 and 2330-302 in content. Unit 6 is similar to the 2330-302 and Unit 7 to the 2330-303. Unit 8 appears to be the science unit and will be close to the 2330-203 and the 2330-301 and is also very similar to the old 236 Part 2 syllabus content.
