hi all,

We recently have had an new guy start with us and I have been sent with him a few times, he does seem to know quite a bit but does make some mistakes as a 3rd year apprentice I am wondering if he is really sutable to supervise me( the other day I sent him to do a Earth loop on the bell spur and basically found him trying to take an earth loop of the 9v bell!!!) he states he has done the NVQ level 2, when I asked regarding the AM2 ect he had never heard of it, he is being paid ÂŁ12.50/hour as an electrican but I seem to be doing most of the work, talking to customers (there is a language barrier as he is Polish but speaks relatively good English), dealing with test sheets ect.

So is someone with a NVQ level 2 electrical installation and electrican?

Probably a matter between you and your bosses as qualifications don't necessarily prove you can do the job.
I agree. I have come across extremely competent and able mates and labourers who have often shown themselves more skilled and knowledgeable than supposedly qualified sparks with all the NVQ's and certificates to go in their portfolio.. some of them for what ever reason never did formal training or qualifications, experience and skills are more valuable than any NVQ folder...

We live in a world of litigation and I can tell help thinking I feel something happens how doesn't he prove he is competent? Surly qualification go a long way in this? I'm not talking about an spark that has been thin the trade years, he is about 30

If you don't think he is competent speak with your line manager or similar if you have concerns regarding his ability?

I've tried, don't seem interested, sparks are thin on the ground ATM and this one is the only one we seem to have managed to get.

The issue I have is I am the apprentice who should be learning and he's the tradesman and is suppose to have the knowledge to teach me....

Sounds like you know some things and he knows some things. When someone is struggling at work regards a task you share what you know and the other person is able to learn. He is only level 2 which is pretty basic knowledge. AM2 is usually after level 3. If you are third year sounds like you are pretty close to mastering quite a lot. Maybe together you can make a team that is effective. Being an electrician is one thing, having extra qualties like leadership is very different here is your opportunity to shine and lead the way showing your boss your not just an electrician but a useful worker who can help others and supervise a bit. I would love it if I was your boss. I would think "mhmm that guy is going to go far, not only a good spark but has initiative and helpful in growing the business"

I really wish it was like that, we are run by a manager on behalf of the owner who is not present and I'm not sure that the manager really cares which is a bit of a shame, maybe they are talking note, but I can't see how I'll benifit from it.
