Hi guys, just spent all morning on the phone to various offices. I am an Irish qualified electrician but thinking of moving to the UK.

Naric said my certs are equivalent to NVQ level 3 to 4 but could not say what this is. Basically I want to know am I a sparks or not in UK.

Naric told me to contact JIB who gave me a list of courses I needed to do at a small fortune

Jib then told me to contact ECA who gave me another list of courses to do at another small fortune.

I accept that there must be variances in standards between the two countries but to do all these courses will take me to xmas and rob me.

In Ireland you must serve a 4 year apprenticeship and 3 months of every year is spent in college. you cannot become a sparks any other way.

Basically can I get a job in the UK as a spark and maybe do these courses as I go along.

I love this forum because of its honest replies, good or bad,
Thanks

Cant help you here mate as its outside of ny knowledge scope at the mo.....but i would have thought maybe a few short courses (to satisfy the powers that be) just to familiarise youself with standard UK practices would suffice. After all you will have probably all the transferable skills anyway so it sounds like whoever you spoke to was seeing ££££ signs lighting up in front of em.........

You would most likely have to update your BS7671 to the 17th edition at the very least, Although if you did join a scam, they sometimes give you a year to update

Presuming that he's in the south of Ireland, he more than likely hasn't any BS 7671-related qualifications to update, which presumably is the issue.

Cheers guys.
I am from the south and have no BS 7671. I was told I could sit the 17th edition. Is that an exam or a course. How do I get a copy of it.Its being a while since I did any exams so might be a bit rusty. And what is this NVQ level 3 to 4. Can't seem to find much info on it.

17th Edition is the current edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations. They are more than likely referring to the City & Guilds qualification which addresses it - currently 2382-10 for the full course, but which will be replaced with 2382-12 incorporating Amendment No. 1 (2011).

NVQ is work-based and demonstrates that you are able to do the job. Level 3 would be more likely. My understanding of Level 4 is that it would be managerial.

Nolnoc, where abouts in the South are you? i've seen companies charge £400 upwards for 17th Ed wiring regs (C&G 2382). if your're near the border you could do the full course in Newry (South Regional College), Co. Down for about £90.

I'm from the Mullingar about an hour from the border. Newry is only up the road from me I worked in it great town. i'll give them a buzz in the morning. I just want to get this all sorted before I go.

hi guys, im in same position like him but naric has give me nvq 2 foar a electrician diploma from romania, so can you tell me what courses i nead to make to can legaly work like electrician in uk, i have a lot of experience in romania in marine and civil construction like electrician.

Julian

I was recently talking to an Irish sparks on site that had a JIB card, (he seemed to like showing it off, it looked very worn and fake like :)), anyway he said that he just got the forms the JIB, and applied and got the card.

Let us know how you get on!

From what threads on JIB cards i have read on here a worn one is a sign of authenticity.......its the shiny ones that often turn out to be "not real"/bogus whatever..lol..........
