Hi everyone,

Im looking to do my electrical NVQ and was wondering if anyone would be able to help me with a few questions that I have about it.

First of all I understand that the electrical apprenticship consists of the NVQ now but was wanting to know if I have to attend college for just the NVQ or if I could work with a company and do all the portfolio and paperwork etc in my own free time.

This woud be very helpful if anyone could reply and help me with this.

Thanks very much

Joseph

Through the college they can usually be done as either day release or block release, you will have a mixture of both college based and onsite work (the same as the 2330 was).

Hi Joseph,

I teach NVQ Level 1 and 2 to first year apprentices.

It consists of 4 days block release with me, and 1 day in college doing Btec National, either at a college, or in my case the college comes to us, so the students are in house 5 days a week. NVQ L1 and L2 is a 30 week programme, 10 weeks for L1, and 20 weeks for L2. In reality Level 1 and 2 can be done easily in 20 weeks if you apply yourself and knuckle down, 13 of my 17 learners this year have completed and took between 18 and 20 weeks, they are now out at work, and just come in for their Btec one day a week.

In year 2 you work towards NVQ L3, this is done in company, so you are at work etc. your assessor comes out every 6 weeks and gives you tasks, collects your evidence etc to make sure you are fulfilling the assessment route summaries and whatever else you need to do, you can also contact him by email, phone or whatever other means you choose. You will still attend college 1 day per week to carry on your Btec.
You will complete your Btec in year 3, and thats it unless you wish to go further to HNC, HND etc etc.

Cheers..........Howard.
