Hi there,

I'm strongly considering going offshore. Getting my compex booked in the next couple of weeks. Survival after that. Medical etc. I have a job waiting for me once I do these courses.

Basically, what I want to know is .. What's life like out there ? Any stories would be great.

  • Travel
  • Accommodation
  • Work
  • Food
  • Things to do at night ?
  • etc etc

Cheers
Jd

worked offshore for a while a few years back.

company paid for travel, hotels, food etc

genarally the food offshore is excelent, they want to make it as comfortable as possible. the rigs i was on had all or most of the following.

Gym
TV room with full sky/ sports package
Freeview in the bedrooms
24 hour canteen where you can help yourself ( i put my gut down to this)
Smoking rooms
Nintendo Wii in the TV room

Can be pretty lonely

Agree it can be lonely, especially on your first trip, but keep your head down, go with the flow and it will be ok.
14 x twelve hour shifts is nothing, you may be asked to do 2hrs overtime each night depending on project, you will be tired but think of the cash and time off.
All platforms have full Sky tv, and usually Sky sports, films etc...
Usually two man cabins, both dayshift or one on days one on nights.
Food in general is pretty good but its not all fillet steaks every day, usual home cooked food, decent salad bars, plenty of fruit available.
Most have gyms, running machines, weights available as well.
Quite a few are now installing Wi- Fi in the cabins and tv lounges, it's very good but totally kills the general conversation with the lads, and for a first tripper you need to mix with the other lads, with your head stuck in an iPad or iPhone you won't get to know anyone.
The best bit is it will be a totally new experience, new working practices, loads of rules, loads to learn, and hopefully the start of a long offshore career.

I work offshore and love it, spent a few weeks at home on pay aswell. Generally the food and accommodation are spot on also the rec rooms. Try and go on a limited company basis as the money is better.

Agree and disagree, limited company will pay slightly more but you will first on the down man list.
If offered PAYE at least your overnight hotel and meals are paid by employing company, also any train fares to Aberdeen.
Leave and holiday pay as well, at the of the day it's what suits the individual.
