Hi all, i'm looking to get trained up for oil rigs. I'm an JIB approved sparks. I've already booked the Bosiet & MIST training. Is there any other training that would get me on the rigs quicker?

Cheers all

Please do not be disheartened but you will need to know somebody with some clout to get on the rigs, i know lads who have trained up to go out there and never got anywhere near them with comp-ex and rope access.
Theres a queue of guys wanting to go on them so they can take their pick up and nearly always past experience is essential.
You will be asked when your last trip was, you say never been out there before, and they will tell you that they will be in touch and they never ring!!!!!!!!!
A potential way in is starting in the gas yards in south wales and on the south coast. Make some contacts and worm your way in.
dont want to put a dampener on things
keep us informed of how you go on

Cheers Matt, thats the truth of it from what ive gleaned from trawling the internet. Think i'll find a better way to 'invest' 2.5k on training. I apreciate the straight talking, cheers

There is several agencies in Aberdeen that you can sign up with, As long as your compex and north sea survival is up to date. You can expect calls within 3 -5 months. A lot of the rigs work on a 3 tiered ring system where you start in the outer ring you then log enough hours and as long as you are willing to drop everything and go when called you will work your way down to the next tier 2 ring and again into the tier 1 ring. When they are looking for people they will first contact the people in tier 1 and then tier 2 and then tier 3 and then agency. I know 4 people that have gone this way successfully. Although there is also truth in the saying "It's not what you know but who you know"

Hello. I'm a 35 year old electrician who has runs his own business in this field and I am looking for some advice on getting onto the oil rigs as an electrician. From what I can gather there are various safety courses that I need to acquire that are not cheap. I'm not sure if there are any electrical course I can do onshore that will help me get a start easier but I know some exist. I am prepared to spend the money and gain all the relevant bits and bobs for me to have a chance of getting a position but I'm worried that even though I might get all the necessary certificates etc that it is a case of who you know because I have no hands on experience.
Please advise and any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks
