I want to train as a domestic installer and the nearest training provider is OLCI ( I live in Manchester ). The training package they offer for training as a domestic installer is this-

AL Level 2 Certificate for Domestic Electrical Installers inc. Part P

City & Guilds 17th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations (2382-10)

City & Guilds Fundamental Inspection, Testing and Initial Verification (2392-10)

City & Guilds In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (2377)

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Certificate

For all this I was told it would cost ÂŁ3995 and I don't want to do the PV course or any other course which isn't necessary. Can someone tell me which courses I need to take to be competent and qualified to work as a domestic installer. Also, Do I have to register as a domestic installer with the NICEIC before I can legally work in people's houses as a domestic installer? Thanks.

Hi

I have just gone for the 2357 with Olci. I looked at the domestic installer route and was presented the domestic list as above for the same price. Don't think that you will get a discount for not doing the pv. I would do it just to get some more experience. Think you will have to get an answer from some of the more experienced members of this forum, but what you listed seems to be the basics

If i was you put a ad in the local paper for a couple of weeks advertising yourself as a sparky and see how many calls you get mate..
You mite end up saving for your 4k for something else...
Im not trying to put you off im just being honest!

After doing all that you still won't know enough to go out there and do it alone, trust me.

For a domestic installer as they now call it, you don't require 2377 or the PV. So i my eyes right away you're paying for 2 things you don't or won't need.

Hi SRobson,

Alana here from OLCI Construction Training.

I can see you have a few questions about the Domestic Electrical Installer course we offer. I would like to discuss this further with you. Please call me on 0800 316 8100. Alternatively you can email me on [email protected] with your number and a suitable time to call you back.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

After doing all that what else would I need to learn to go out there and do it alone?
EXPERIENCE!!!
Would you have some one in your house fiddling with the electrics if you knew he had taken a course that lasted a few weeks and had no actual training on how to do the job SAFELY? Do it properly by going to college or not at all. You could kill someone.
