Hello,

While pulling up floor boards for plumbing purposes (1950s semi detached) I came across an old style junction box (black plastic and screwed) attached to a joist. This is for the downstairs lighting circuit from what I can tell (size of wires and disappearing into the ceiling in a position corresponding to a downstairs light gave it away). I know currently these days junction boxes if not accessible (i.e. under floor boards under carpet) they need to be the maintenance free type. Therefore I was wondering whether :

A) It should be replaced with a Wago box or similar? As a like for like replacement.

or

B) Or is it a case of; Best to leave it alone as if you touch the existing installation, the whole circuit needs updating to current regs? (currently black or red, PVC sheathed + Earths, modern CU)

Cheers,

Martin

answer( b) I would leave a lone ,providing it accessible at some stage, if on the 1st floor
has long you can get to it at some point for testing purpose only
how many j/b fitted to the old houses lots .

I came across several of these today under the floor whilst looking for a cable to spur for a new towel radiator. Put the floorboard back down, and run a supply from the CU ;)
