Hi all,

I saw some work done by an old school sparky the other day, who has been in the trade for over 30 years. One of the tricks he used for fixing cable to joists e.t.c was to nail in small loops of twin and earth along the joists, and then he would simply thread the new cable through these loops. Has anyone else seen this method, or uses it ?? And would the current regulations allow this as a suitable fixing method ?

Have seen it in the past whare a peice of t+e has been used to hold multiple cables to a wall before its plastered, rather than using individual clips. Probably didn't have any capping wide enough

Did it myself a couple of weeks ago because it was cheaper, faster than doing a proper job. Don't like doing it but I was told to, so what do you do? Didn't look as good as clipping or trunking but it does its job.

This has been done for donkey's years in lofts and other out of sight situations. Like everything else we do, it can look like a pigs ear or you can spend a little more time and effort, to produce an acceptable appearance. In reality the cut strips of T&E is probably kinder to the installed cable than proprietary clips that have been driven in too deep/hard!!!...lol!!

wonder what today's young sparks would do if we took away their plastic clips, rawlplugs ( yes we made our own out of bits of scrap wood), power tools ( brace & bit for wood. hammer and rawlplug tool for brick) , and digital all singing & dancing meters.

Rawl-plug tool.......love it (a blast, and a blood-blister, from the past).

Ive applied T+E off-cuts to attach other cables to a surface loads of times in the past.

Cheaper to buy clips nowerdays me thinks though.

Rawl-plug tools.....it was only 30 years ago.

Ouch.

Ah, the rawl plug tool! Haven't seen one of them for years. I remember being on site, the first time I was entrusted to do anything other than sweep up, me old man asking me to make a whole lotta holes, and handing me this damn thing. 'You'll use a drill when you learn some respect for the old ways. That way you'll appreciate it' well I think I had a black thumbail for about a year afterwards. I'll remind you this was late 90s and we had all DeWalt stuff, but I only got to touch it when I was carrying it back and forth. Anyone know where I can get hold of a rawl tool?

Oh and the good old wood splinter plugs. All these old ways, mind, can get you out of a scrape if you're stuck.

We were still using them on my old firm far quicker and more controlled when doing thermolite new build.
