Got a call to pop around to recently extended small house, the lady told me she had a spark around to fit a couple of linked smoke detectors, he had disappeared without certifying them.. and building regs wanted a cert to sign off the build.
I smell a rat
Q) Who did the electrics on the extension....
A) the builders
Q) Did anyone test the install or does Building control wanna see an installation cert / part P notification?
A) The builders said it was just an extension of the upstairs ring and lighting circuit to the 1 x bedroom, and the building control letter says nothing about the electrics.
Q) Yes but works have been carried out and someone should have tested??
A) Really ???
Took a look at the consumer unit, installed by Noah!! old voltage operated circuit breakers, therfore bonding / parallel path issues....
Now I understand the ladys view point, the electrics might be old but they work... trying to explain that any works need to be tested and its hard to test CPC's that aint there and equipotential bonding that aint there and if it was could prove lethal...??
and she really needs to at least let me check out her instal and do a report and recomendations and get a new board in with 17th edition level protection, and full bonding and earthing arrangements...!!
how can building control completely miss the likes of this and leave us to sort it out ?
by the way she only asked me to check 2 x smaoke detectors were installed / designed / comissioned correctly.
Wher do you start...!
