Hello all,

Just completed Part P and am on my first job in an old sixties tower block. Replacing a consumer unit. Lots of existing old wiring - no longer used - in metal conduit buried deep in concrete. I can't pull it through and can find no other access / inspection points. Some of the wiring ends above the consumer unit. Would it be Ok to leave it? If so, how should I isolate the ends? crimps?

Cheers

If you can't remove then you have to leave it. as long as there is no chance of it becoming live just get a nice sharp bolster and snip it off as close to the conduit end as you can, Then espicially at the CU push the ends back up into the conduit and dab some silicone up into it.

I'm assuming this a total rewire, and your not going to use the conduits as a containment.

Thanks Malcolm,

There is one conduit which includes the lighting circuit and some wiring for a no longer existing bathroom heater. I'm not re-wiring the whole house, just changing the CU...

So your going to have be careful then as you will have live circuits going through them. Your obviously going to have to terminate that conduit into your new board.

My original suggestion would still hold but you will have to be careful you don't damage the insulation of the "LIVE" cables. You could also bring the redundant cables into the CU then exit the CU with them into a small adaptable box, and just note what they are on your EIC.

Is this cable PVC or VIR and how is your earthing done, through the conduit or a CPC conductor. I'd be suprised in the 60's if the lighting as a CPC.
